THE ENCAMPMENT 2007

New York City

(History of quarantine on Roosevelt Island}

The Encampment was produced by Thom Sokoloski & Jenny Anne McCowan in partnership with openhousenewyork. An amazing undertaking by New Yorkers to realize a much ignored history of their city.

This version expressed and engaged the public in the history of quarantine on Roosevelt Island from the beginning of the 19th century to the end of the first half of the 20th century. This history included prisons, poor houses, hospitals, asylums, etc., as well as temporal quarantine facilities to deal with influenza, small-pox, and tuberculosis.

It was presented at dusk on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island with the view of Manhattan and Queens on either side.100 tents were set-up referencing the 100-beds once available in the existing historic, yet abandoned, small-pox hospital situated on the north end of the installation.

Over 150 public participants, production personnel and volunteers were involved in a 2-month creative process, and over12,000 people experienced the work on-site during its three evening presentation from sunset to midnight. Over 60% of the attendees who resided in NYC had never been on Roosevelt Island in their lifetimes. The installation could be seen by thousands in buildings overlooking the East River as well as ferries, boats, planes, etc.
